You hungry?

The baby Christian doesn’t mature overnight. Every Christian has to go through a process that goes on as long as that person chooses to take step after step towards growth.

Every time you make a decision to choose God’s way over your own way, it is a step forward in the right direction. It surely doesn’t feel like it at the time, but one year, five years, ten years, down the road, you can look back at your journey, and you will be surprised to see how far you’ve come and how much progress you’ve made.

We get to choose ‘a long obedience in the same direction’.

The term I use for this is: a long obedience in the same direction. (There’s a book by that name, written by Eugene Peterson). I love that phrase. The Bible reminds us repeatedly, in not so many words, that we get to choose ‘a long obedience in the same direction’. We do our part by choosing obedience to what we know the Father is asking of us, and He does His part by doing the supernatural work that we can’t do.

When we choose that obedience, the Holy Spirit comes alongside us to equip us with power to do what God has called us to do and to help us walk in obedience. A friend recently reminded me that there is abundant grace and mercy from the Father for everything we have to learn – and that is a most beautiful gift!

Wherever you are on your journey with the Lord, remember that it is all process, and that God is in it with you. You are not alone in the journey of moving from spiritual milk to spiritual meat. It isn’t going to be easy, but it will be worth it. One day you’ll realize that you need more than just the spiritual basics. You’ll desire to go deeper, and higher, as you hunger for more truth, more of God’s Word, and more application of it in your life.

And because the Word is living and breathing, it will never grow stale. Like manna to the Israelites in the desert, it will continue to feed you for as long as you reach for it. If you’re spiritually hungry, really hungry – it will satisfy you and lead you into spiritual maturity. We can’t attain perfection this side of heaven, but we can achieve maturity.

If you’re hungry, dig in! Isaiah 55
